Printer drivers are software that allow your computer and printer to communicate with each other. Without the correct driver, your printer may not function at all, or may print incorrectly. This guide walks you through two methods to install drivers on Windows 10 and 11.
Method 1: Automatic Installation via Windows
Windows 10 and 11 can often find and install the correct driver automatically when you connect your printer.
- 1Connect the Printer. Plug your printer into your computer using a USB cable, or ensure it is connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- 2Open Settings. Press Windows + I to open Settings, then go to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- 3Add Printer. Click Add device. Windows will search for available printers. Select yours from the list.
- 4Wait for Driver Install. Windows will automatically download and install the appropriate driver. This may take a few minutes.
Note: Make sure Windows Update is enabled so the system can download the latest drivers from Microsoft's catalog.
Method 2: Manual Driver Download
If Windows cannot find the driver automatically, you can download it directly from the manufacturer's website.
- 1Find Your Printer Model. Check the label on the front or bottom of your printer for the exact model number (e.g., HP DeskJet 4155e).
- 2Visit Manufacturer Website. Go to the manufacturer's official website and navigate to their Drivers & Downloads or Software section.
- 3Select Your Operating System. Choose Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit or 32-bit as appropriate). Download the Full Feature Software & Drivers package.
- 4Run the Installer. Open the downloaded file and follow the on-screen setup instructions. Keep the printer connected when prompted.
- 5Restart Your Computer. After installation completes, restart your PC to finalize the driver setup.
Verifying the Installation
After installation, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and check that your printer appears in the list and shows as "Ready". Try printing a test page to confirm everything is working.
