How to Fix a Paper Jam — All Printer Models

Reading time: 6 min read  |  Last reviewed: May 2025

A paper jam is one of the most common printer issues. Fortunately, most jams can be resolved quickly without professional help. This guide covers how to safely remove jammed paper from virtually any inkjet or laser printer.

Before You Start

  • Turn off your printer and unplug it from the power source
  • Allow a laser printer to cool for 10 minutes before reaching inside
  • Never use scissors or sharp objects inside the printer
  • Pull paper slowly and steadily — never yank it

Removing Jammed Paper (Inkjet Printers)

  1. 1
Open All Access Panels. Open the front cover, rear access door, and paper output tray. Check each area for jammed paper.
  2. 2
Locate the Jam. Gently look inside using a flashlight if needed. Identify where the paper is stuck.
  3. 3
Remove Gently. Grip the paper with both hands and pull it slowly in the direction the paper normally travels (usually downward or outward). Never pull against the feed direction.
  4. 4
Check for Torn Pieces. Make sure no small pieces of paper remain inside. Even a small fragment can cause repeat jams.
  5. 5
Close All Panels and Restart. Close all covers, plug in the printer, and turn it on. The printer should automatically run a short initialization cycle.

Tip: If the printer's screen shows a jam error even after clearing it, try turning the printer completely off, waiting 30 seconds, and powering it back on.

Laser Printer Jams

Laser printers use heat to fuse toner, so the fuser assembly can be very hot. Always allow adequate cooling time before reaching inside.

  1. 1
Open the Rear Panel. Most laser printer jams are accessible via the rear door or the panel near the fuser unit.
  2. 2
Remove the Toner Cartridge. Some models require removing the toner cartridge to access the paper path. Place it on a flat surface away from direct light.
  3. 3
Pull Paper Straight Out. Carefully pull the paper toward you, keeping it as flat and straight as possible to avoid tearing.
  4. 4
Reinstall Components. Place the toner cartridge back, close all doors, and restart the printer.

Preventing Future Jams

  • Only load paper that matches the printer's supported size and weight
  • Fan the paper stack before loading to prevent sheets sticking together
  • Do not overfill the paper tray beyond the maximum fill line
  • Store paper in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture absorption
  • Clean your printer's paper rollers every few months with a dry lint-free cloth
